NEW TOOL: Public Health Meets Public Safety

Public Health Meets Public Safety is a new tool for California that compiles over 30 different publicly available data sources on social determinants of health and justice outcomes in one easy-to-use portal. This project, a collaboration between The Council of State Governments (CSG) Justice Center and California’s Council on Criminal Justice and Behavioral Health (CCJBH), is both a research-based framework and a data visualization tool. It allows policymakers, advocates, grant writers, and other stakeholders in California to see how criminal justice outcomes and community environmental factors—such as educational attainment, local health care resources, and homelessness rates—converge at the state, regional, and county levels. By having one easy-to-use location for this information, we can begin to meet California’s goal of reducing incarceration and untangle the context behind justice-related outcomes.
