DUI Courts are a type of postconviction collaborative court dedicated to changing the behavior of defendants with repeat DUI (driving under the influence) or DWI (driving while impaired) charges. Based on the drug court model, DUI courts provide individualized treatment and supervision and through a system of supervision, accountability, and rehabilitative treatment. Variants of DUI court include drug courts that also accept DUI offenders. These are commonly referred to as “hybrid” DUI courts or DUI/Drug Courts.
The Goals of DUI Courts are to:
Protect public safety by using the drug court model to address the root cause of impaired driving;
Reduce traffic fatalities and limit impaired driving; and
Support defendant’s return to society by addressing underlying substance use disorders and mental health issues
